Stories That Matter: Using Climate Narratives to Drive Real Change

Introduction

We live in a world sinking under waves of climate anxiety. For years, the dominant narrative has been doom and gloom—endless stories of apocalypse, natural disasters, and a planet on the brink. Yes, these warnings have gotten attention, but they’ve also left people feeling paralyzed. The real question is: how do we move from fear to action? At Just Be Nice Studios, we believe the answer lies in storytelling.

We’re not here to just sound alarms—we’re here to change the conversation. The right stories don’t just inform; they inspire. And when it comes to climate change, we need stories that spark hope, action, and real solutions.

Why Stories Matter

Popular culture shapes how we see the world. Whether we’re aware of it or not, the films, shows, and books we consume impact how we think about everything—including climate change. Think about it: for years, the car has symbolized freedom and prosperity on screen. But what’s the reality? Traffic, pollution, and the destruction of our environment. It’s time to shift the narrative.

What if we, as filmmakers and writers redefine what heroism looks like in a world that’s rapidly changing. It’s not about painting a utopia, but about showing the gritty, real work that goes into building a better future. The stories we tell today can inspire the world we want to live in tomorrow.

From fear to Hope

Here’s the reality: 75% of young people are terrified about their future. That’s not just because of the facts—it’s because they’re being fed a relentless diet of climate doom. Fear can wake people up, but it rarely moves them to action. If we want people to do something, we need to give them a reason to believe in the fight.

Lucy Stone of Climate Spring nails it when she says narratives are the foundation for change. If we keep feeding audiences dystopian futures, all we’re doing is reinforcing the idea that the world is beyond saving. Instead, we need to show what’s possible—how people, communities, and businesses are already making real strides. These aren’t just feel-good stories; they’re the map to a better future. And that’s exactly what we need right now.

Winning Climate Stories

The good news? There’s already a wave of storytellers tackling the climate crisis head-on. From films to TV shows, creators are shifting away from the typical disaster narrative to something more powerful—stories of resilience, progress, and hope. And they’re making an impact.

Look at how Sex Education subtly normalized sustainable living, showing clean energy as the backdrop to everyday life. These aren’t just climate stories; they’re human stories. And when people see themselves in these stories, they feel like they can be part of the solution.

But it doesn’t stop there. Climate storytelling doesn’t need to scream “CLIMATE CRISIS!” at the audience. In fact, some of the most effective stories simply weave sustainability into the fabric of the narrative. By showing characters making conscious, sustainable choices, we’re slowly shifting the perception of what’s “normal” in society. This is how real change happens.

Challenging Power Dynamics in Climate Narratives

We can’t talk about climate storytelling without examining the power dynamics that shape these stories. The truth is, the global majority—Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities—have suffered the brunt of climate impacts, despite being the least responsible for causing them. Yet, too often, the heroes in climate narratives remain Western, American, or Eurocentric, ignoring the fact that some of the most innovative and resilient solutions are coming from the very communities most affected by climate change.

Indigenous wisdom, local enterprise, and grassroots movements in the Global South offer powerful stories of hope, solutions, and resilience. It's time we challenge the colonial mentality that still dominates the screen and elevate these voices. These aren’t just token representations—they are the real protagonists on the frontlines of the fight for a sustainable future. By rebalancing the narrative and spotlighting these unsung heroes, we can create a more just and inclusive vision of climate action—one that honours those who have been fighting on the front lines all along.

Building a Future Through Story

So, what makes a great climate story? At Just Be Nice Studios, we believe it comes down to three things: justice, journey, and world-building  We need to hold accountable those responsible for the mess we’re in, show the hard but necessary journey ahead, and imagine what a regenerative, thriving future could look like.

It’s not enough to point fingers or paint dystopias. We need to show how we get from here to there—how real people are making real changes. From grassroots activists to innovative entrepreneurs, the climate movement is already full of heroes. It’s time we put them front and center in our stories.

At JBN, we’re here to tell those stories. Not just the glossy, feel-good ones, but the raw, real, and powerful ones that drive change. The climate crisis isn’t a genre—it’s the most important story of our time. And we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and tell it.

We’re not here to create more noise. We’re here to create impact. The climate crisis is the defining story of our generation, and the way we tell it will shape the future. So let’s make sure we’re telling it right—showing the solutions, the resilience, and the people leading the charge.

At JBN, we believe the right story can spark real change.
